Snow and stuff

I’m sitting here in my living room this morning, trying to blog, but nothing is coming to mind. What to talk about? Those of you who blog, how do you decide your subject matter? I’ve just been staring out the window, watching big fat flakes of snow falling out of a grey sky… and that’s all that I can think about.

It’s been a good morning so far. The dogs and I went to the open space park on the other side of the river, and they got to chase the ball until they were exhausted. We have a Chuckit! Ball Launcher (shameless plug, this is the best $15 I ever spent on a dog toy), and I can throw the ball 50 yards without hurting myself, so they get a real workout. I couldn’t keep up with them otherwise. After they were exhausted, I went to the grocery store and bought a few things. Is it just me, or is toilet paper getting really freaking expensive? Probably because I don’t buy the cheap stuff. I’m spoiled. Then we came home. This is my life. Boring, slow, and we don’t get much done, but it is what it is.

The dogs have collapsed on the floor since we’ve been home; Ares is back in the bedroom in his “spot”, and Apollo is laying right next to my computer chair having happy doggy dreams.

Apollo

Some days I really envy the animals in this house.

Axial tilt is the reason for the season.

Let’s keep the Sol in Solstice!

Wonder if we’ll get this kind of snow this year:

Spring at last.

Tulips by *Kaessa on deviantART

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and spring is finally here.  I’d love to go out and do some yardwork, but that is currently on hold.  I did manage to make it out to spray some Roundup on the weeds, however.  My biggest challenge is trying to figure out how to Make the Sunflowers Not Grow.   When we bought the house, the yard was overgrown with sunflowers, and I didn’t get them out before they totally went to seed.    Unfortunately.   Now I have a bazillion baby sunflowers coming up, and I’m not physically up to going out and pulling them all up.  I’m waiting to see if the Roundup has any effect on them.  If so, it’s herbicide, baby.

On the plus side, I have some lovely tulips coming up, and my lilacs are in full bloom.  The late frost didn’t kill off all the blooms on the peach trees, and it looks like I’ll have a nice crop of peaches for the fall.

Pretty, yes?

On a fun note, I just discovered the new and updated photo feature in my Wordpress.  Yay for updates!  This will make it much easier for me to post random photos from Picasa or from my Photobucket page.

For those of you following my illness, here is an update:  no news.  My doctor still has no idea what’s causing the pain, and has officially given up and referred me to a rheumatologist.  He thinks it may be some type of auto-immune disorder.  I’m just hoping we find out what it is and hopefully make it go away.

100 Posts!

Didn’t realize it, but yesterday’s post was number 100!  Not bad, considering I figured I’d get bored with this blog and stop posting to it after a week (this was attempt 4 or 5 at starting a blog).  I was going to do a contest, but with the move still not completed, it probably isn’t a good idea.  Maybe I’ll have a “finally moved in” contest once I get settled into the new house (if we ever close, that is).  Any good contest ideas?  I’d love to hear them.   The haiku contest was great fun, and I really loved the submissions to that one.

Anyway… just a short post today to keep in touch,  but more later.   I’m hoping it’s going to cool off enough so I can start knitting again.  It’s hard to knit when it’s so hot the yarn won’t slip through your fingers.

See you all later!

Weekend.

We’re at Brian’s parents’ house borrowing their wifi for a few minutes, and I figured I’d drop in for a quick update. Kitties are all good, and so are the dogs. The temperatures here have dropped a few degrees and we had a lovely thunderstorm last night. Ares woke me up when it started… poking me with his paw to tell me, “MOM! The thunder is scary!” Poor guy. I made him lay down next to the bed and he calmed down.

We’re off taking a drive this afternoon. Brian is taking me up to the top of Grand Mesa, and I’ll be taking pictures. I’ll post the good ones here. I just hope it’s not too scary driving up there.

Ok, time to head out, I’ll update sometime in the next few days with pictures!

Monday Happy List!

Yes, I’m still here!  Chaos and insanity abound, but things are going well.  Except we don’t have a place to live yet.  Hard to move if you have nowhere to move into! If you live in the Grand Junction area and are willing to rent to nice people with a lot of pets, let me know!

Off to continue my search for a nice place to live… but I’ll leave you with my happy list for the day.

Here, in random order, are five things that make me happy.

  1. A Chinese restaurant opening up within walking distance of my house (mmmm sweet and sour chicken)!
  2. The vet filling my prescription for kitty cat sedatives.  That will make the drive much easier on everyone.
  3. Ice cream.  Yum!
  4. The weather finally warming up enough to sleep with the windows open.
  5. Taking walks with my dogs.

I’ll be back posting as soon as I can, and I’ll try to keep everyone updated!

Too hot to knit.

Ok, it’s time for someone to volunteer to climb up on my roof and uncover the air conditioner.  It is officially hot.  WAY too hot.  It’s not extreme or anything, it only got into the 80’s today… but after that really cold winter I am seriously unprepared for this.

I hope it rains tonight.  That will help.

Spring is here – finally!

The weather has finally turned warm. The trees are growing leaves, the grass has turned from brown to green, and the dandelions are in bloom. I know, they’re a weed… but I’ve always loved them. I’ve never had an issue with golden flowers in my yard. I’m sure I’ve had neighbors that it has annoyed, but hey, they’re flowers!

Dandelions

I was going to get some pictures of my lilac bush, but it’s not quite in bloom yet.  Maybe by the weekend.  I think this weekend I’ll have to go out and get some pictures of spring.  After this winter, I think I need to get out.

Coasters!

Or, what to knit when you’re stuck in a car for eleven hours.

I brought some cotton yarn with me on our trip, figuring I’d knit up a coaster on the way. Just for something to keep my hands busy on the road, you know?

Coasters

Little did I know that I’d be in the truck for eleven hours in a row. I didn’t knit the whole time, but I did finish three of the four coasters that I wanted to make. The dogs did wonderfully on the ride… they just slept the whole time. Sure wish I could have done that. It wouldn’t have been so bad, but when we got to the pass to go over the mountains, they were doing “avalanche control”… which means “blowing up the snow on the side of the mountain to make the avalanches fall down, then plowing all the snow off the road”. Something I really appreciate, because there’s nothing I want less than having an avalanche fall on top of me when we’re driving past a thousand foot drop-off. However, it entails waiting by the edge of said thousand foot drop-off for nearly an hour while we waited for them to finish.

I would have knitted the last coaster, but it got dark. I couldn’t finish sewing in ends, either, as I dropped my only darning needle under the seat and couldn’t find it. I’m sure I’ll find it some day in the future, completely on accident, with the end of my finger. Oh well, at least I have an excuse to go to the yarn store, right?

Quant… Finished!

Well, that wasn’t so bad.. once you get the hang of entrelac, it’s pretty easy. I’m going to pick out some new yarn and make another one. This time, I think I’ll go with something a bit more subdued. This one is BRIGHT! My sweetie says it looks like it’s a throwback to the 60’s. Well, he’s probably right, but I like it anyway. It’s fun! And NO, you don’t get a picture of me wearing it.

I did make a couple of mistakes.. most of which I could just ignore (picking up the right stitches can be a pain). However, I managed to drop a stitch somewhere in the beginning, and I think it was a picked up stitch. I had two stitches that were not connected to anything. I put markers on them when I found them (I was about 3/4 of the way through), and went back and just tied them together from the back when I was finished. One thing about entrelac.. you have a definite “backside” that nobody sees, and hiding the mistake was very easy. I just used a short piece of yarn that blended with the colors, tied them together, and sewed in the ends. Looks a bit sloppy from the backside, but you’d never guess it from the front. I like it.

On another front.. the snow has finally ceased, leaving us to tunnel out of the front door. It’s about damn time. I think I’m going to head to the local yarn store and sit with the girls. I think I have a touch of cabin fever.
