Snow and stuff

I’m sitting here in my living room this morning, trying to blog, but nothing is coming to mind. What to talk about? Those of you who blog, how do you decide your subject matter? I’ve just been staring out the window, watching big fat flakes of snow falling out of a grey sky… and that’s all that I can think about.

It’s been a good morning so far. The dogs and I went to the open space park on the other side of the river, and they got to chase the ball until they were exhausted. We have a Chuckit! Ball Launcher (shameless plug, this is the best $15 I ever spent on a dog toy), and I can throw the ball 50 yards without hurting myself, so they get a real workout. I couldn’t keep up with them otherwise. After they were exhausted, I went to the grocery store and bought a few things. Is it just me, or is toilet paper getting really freaking expensive? Probably because I don’t buy the cheap stuff. I’m spoiled. Then we came home. This is my life. Boring, slow, and we don’t get much done, but it is what it is.

The dogs have collapsed on the floor since we’ve been home; Ares is back in the bedroom in his “spot”, and Apollo is laying right next to my computer chair having happy doggy dreams.

Apollo

Some days I really envy the animals in this house.

Update complete

Not only is the update complete, but it went silky smooth.  I love it when that happens. I also did a bit of hunting around, and found out why I haven’t been able to auto-update any of my plugins.  It was a simple change, just one line (AddType x-mapp-php5 .php) to the top of  my .htaccess file and poof everything works now.  I was finally able to get in and clean up all of my tags, too, so I don’t have 18 bajillion tags that I’ve only used once. Next, categories.

Now I just need to come up with something to blog about besides my blog.

Updating the guild site, and other random rambling.

Working on our World of Warcraft guild site is what inspired me to revamp mine.  Revamping mine was the push I needed to get off my butt and complete the graphics for the guild site.  I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.  I’m not a web designer, though Brian pushes me to be one.  Between Joomla, PHPBB3, Wordpress, and thousands of lovely people out there who design themes and templates, I can put together a reasonable facsimile of a website.  I can also poke around and modify them to my needs… barely.

I wish I was a better web designer, but I just seem to lack the imagination and talent to pull it off.  I’m ok at changing what other people have already done, sometimes even making it better, but that initial “oomph” seems to be lacking.  Lately it’s been even more difficult… with the fibro, I’ve been a total scatterbrain.  With the Lyrica, I’ve become even worse.  Sitting down and just thinking seems to be difficult lately, my thoughts are so scattered.  I feel like a wren, flitting from one spot to another, but never staying long en0ugh to actually accomplish anything.

I’ve decided I’m going to make this blog a touchstone of sorts… a place I come every day to blather on.  It may not be much, but it will give me at least one thing to focus on each day that is creative, rather than just spending the day reading web sites and posting on Facebook and Twitter.

I miss work.  I don’t know if I miss working so much as I miss something outside the house to do every day.  I miss the bookstore.  I miss talking with people.  I miss commiserating with my co-workers about how things annoy us.  Just silly stuff, but you can’t do it when you’re trapped at home all day.  I hope the Lyrica will get me back on my feet so I can at least work part-time, y’know?

Harass me if I don’t post, ok?  I’ll deserve it.

Site update

I made it pretty!  Seriously, I was getting tired of the other theme, it had some back end issues that were making me grumpy.  I’m liking this one so far.  Feel free to comment if you agree… or disagree!  Heck, feel free to comment for any old reason, I’d like to hear from you.

First post of the new year?

Damn, I’m falling behind.  It’s been a bit chaotic around here, with the holidays and all, but things are finally starting to calm down.

I’m still trying to get the business off the ground.  I have repaired a grand total of ONE computer, but I totally kicked its butt and cleaned off the half dozen virii it was infected with, all data saved.  Happy me.

My computer wasn’t so fortunate.  I bought a new motherboard (dead RAID controller), power supply (the old one was making funny noises), and case (because this one is just dead sexy).  Everything is up and running just fine, but I was unable to salvage the OS/data from the drives.  I currently have it set up as two separate drives, and (other than the annoyance of having two separate drives) is working just peachy.  I had a current backup in place on our server, so all of my pictures, music, documents, and my World of Warcraft configuration were safe and sound.  It took me the better part of two days to get everything set up the way I wanted it, and now it’s running just how I like it.  So of course, I’m going to partition the main hard drive and install Windows 7 beta on the other partition.   Of course I can’t just leave well enough alone, you should know me better than that by now. :D

On the joys of home ownership:  plumbing sucks.  After two days of drains getting progressively more and more backed up (and stinky!), we finally called in a professional who fixed it in an hour.  Apparently the sewer drain pipe under the house had come apart and was draining sewage right there under the house.  ICK!!!  Brave man that he was, the plumber crawled under the house, reattached the pipe, and restored our drainage… all for the low, low price of $97.  You couldn’t get me to climb under a house with a crawl space filled with sewage for that price.  Maybe not for any price!  Anyway, it’s all fixed up, cleaned up, and smelling … well, not like sewage anymore.  Whew.

Other than that, things are going relatively well.  Brian is not liking his new job much, and my current full-time job is at a company that is on the verge of bankruptcy… but we’re doing ok.  Bills are getting paid, the animals are all happy, we still have the internet.  I wish we had more hours in the day, but other than that… yeah, it’s not bad.

Here’s hoping it stays that way.

100 Posts!

Didn’t realize it, but yesterday’s post was number 100!  Not bad, considering I figured I’d get bored with this blog and stop posting to it after a week (this was attempt 4 or 5 at starting a blog).  I was going to do a contest, but with the move still not completed, it probably isn’t a good idea.  Maybe I’ll have a “finally moved in” contest once I get settled into the new house (if we ever close, that is).  Any good contest ideas?  I’d love to hear them.   The haiku contest was great fun, and I really loved the submissions to that one.

Anyway… just a short post today to keep in touch,  but more later.   I’m hoping it’s going to cool off enough so I can start knitting again.  It’s hard to knit when it’s so hot the yarn won’t slip through your fingers.

See you all later!

Server outage… fixed for now.

I would like to apologize to anyone who’s been trying to read the blog and keeps getting errors.  Apparently, my web host (1&1) has been having issues with the server my sites are on.  I called them this morning due to the third outage in as many weeks, and they’re “working on the problem”.

I’m a bit annoyed, as I have received no notifications of outages… and one was for three days while I was out of town.  Grrr.  No offer of reimbursement, either.   I’d switch hosting providers, but I’ve used them for years and I’m lazy… and moving three sites to a new host would be a pain in the rump, especially since one of them is my guild forum for World of Warcraft.  So, I put up with them for now.  If this keeps up, I’ll definitely be looking for a new host.  Suggestions are welcome.

Gallery is up!

If you’ve noticed, there is a new link at the top of the page next to the “About Me” link… the Gallery!  I’ve only got a few pictures in there currently, but I’m planning on adding pictures of all the pets and perhaps some yarn and scenery and assorted other stuff.  I haven’t quite decided what to do with it yet.

So, hop on over and take a peek at the puppies for now.  Enjoy!

Contest – Sock Yarn Haiku

It was suggested to me that a new blog needs a celebration. How do you celebrate a blog? Well, by having a contest! And not just any contest. This contest is a haiku contest. Write your best haiku about sock yarn, and I will pick someone to win this lovely skein of hand-dyed (by me!) sock yarn. It’s not the most perfect dye-job in the world, as I am still learning. But the colors are fun (if you like green, that is… if you hate green, I have a couple more undyed hanks that I could give a shot at dyeing in the colors you like. No guarantees, though), and hey.. it’s sock yarn!

Sock Yarn

This is a lovely skein, dyed in green, blue and yellow, and completely overdyed in green. It is a 75% Superwash Merino Wool/25% Nylon blend, with 462 yards (422 meters) in the skein.

Sock Yarn

If you’re not sure what a haiku is, here is the dictionary definition:

noun: An unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five syllables respectively.

Here is an example:

Sock yarn in my stash
Lovingly dyed with kool-aid
Delicious color.

Easy… leave a comment with your haiku in it, and you’re automatically entered! I will run the contest through May 15th, and on the 16th I will choose a winner. Winner will be completely subjective… I pick the one I like the best! I’ll need your email address or a link to your blog to notify you if you’re the winner.

Thanks for visiting!

Update, May 8: I have added a matching set of stitch markers to the prize!

The Sacraments of Knitting

Is knitting a religion? Could be… and judging from the Ravelry forums, there are thousands of denominations! I found this lovely post over at The Lumpy Knitter’s blog – The Sacraments of Knitting: A Simple Tract. Go take a look, I think you’ll enjoy it. It definitely made me smile.

I wonder if I could hand a few of those out to friends?
