Homemade snacks

Media_httpkaessacomwp_quzof
I decided to make some homemade snack mix today, mostly because I have been dying for snacks and not willing to pay the extra cost for pre-made Chex Mix or trail mix. So, this was somewhat of an experiment. Recipe from the box of Kroger Rice Bitz: Ultimate Snack Mix
  • 1/4 cup margarine or butter
  • 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 7 cups Rice or Corn Bitz, or combination of the two
  • 1 cup peanuts
  • 1 cup mini-sized pretzels
  • 1 cup oyster crackers
In large microwave-safe bowl, melt margarine on HIGH. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and sugar. Gradually add cerals, peanuts, pretzels and crackers; stir to coat evenly. Microwave on HIGH 5 ot 6 minutes, stirring thoroughly with rubber spatula every 2 minutes and scraping sides and bottom of bowl. Spread on absorbent paper to cool. Store in airtight container. (In case you were wondering, I added about 1/2 cup of raisins after it was done cooking. I didn't want molten raisins). Easy, right? Things I learned:
  • Try to remember to buy ALL the ingredients when you are trying a new recipe.
  • Soy sauce is a sort of OK substitute for Worcestershire sauce.
  • I need to buy Worcestershire sauce if I try this again.
  • Two minutes in the microwave between stirs is much too long, unless you're trying to start a fire.
  • Burned cereal doesn't smell very good.
Yes, I nearly started a fire in my microwave. Fortunately, I managed to stop it before it actually burst into flame, and I was able to pull out the burned bits and salvage about 3/4 of the recipe. What I have left tastes acceptable, but I seriously need to try this again with the proper ingredients. Without the fire this time.
