Have I mentioned that I adore Tim Minchin? I love this song.

Yes, we’ve survived another year. This one was interesting, and sometimes difficult, but it was a good year. We stayed up until midnight watching movies, and popped open a bottle of sparkling cider to celebrate. I would have preferred a bottle of champagne, but Brian was on call, I can’t drink because of my meds, and Will is still too young. So, sparkling cider it was. At least I woke up this morning sans hangover.
Hope your new year is great!

I love the new ad by the Gap:
Why do I like it so much? Not just because it’s a cute jingle, or because of the great energy of the dancers… but because it’s all-inclusive. Even a shout-out to Solstice! It’s nice to see us pagans and non-believers getting a nod for a change.
Why else do I like it? Because it has the American Family Association’s panties in a bunch.
AFA believes this ad to be completely dismissive and disrespectful to those who celebrate the meaning and spirit of Christmas. AFA asked Gap for a meeting to discuss the ad, but Gap has not responded.
If this is Gap’s answer to recognizing Christmas, we are deeply disappointed.
WTF? Because they recognize that not everyone celebrates the Christian Christmas holiday, they’re disrespectful? I’m sorry, but this “War on Christmas” crap has gone way too far. Christmas is not the only holiday this season. Other people celebrate other holidays. We’re being disrespectful by not ignoring those people? Oh, to be one of the oppressed majority. Get over yourselves, people.
Anyway.. rant off.
Go Gap. I think I’ll stop by and get something this year for my holiday gift giving.

Edit: I sent them an email, and got a response:
Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoy your holiday ad.
It’s nice to see an “all-inclusive” holiday ad campaign! Great energy
and a fun jingle. I’ll make it a point to stop and get something at the
Gap for a gift this year. My 15 year old son desperately needs some new
jeans.Nice work!
And their response:
Thank you for your email. We are glad that you have enjoyed our latest
holiday advertising campaign. Thank you for understanding our desire to
appeal to a broad cross-section of consumers and be respectful of a
variety of traditions and faiths. We appreciate your interest and are glad that you will continue to honor
us with your patronage. If we may be of further assistance, please contact us at

The fires in California must be producing massive amounts of smoke. It’s as smoky here as it would be if we were having a fire. I took the dogs out for a run this morning, and noticed just how much smoke there was when the sun came up:
The sun was really red. This picture doesn’t even do justice to how red it was. The sun was just clearing the Bookcliffs, and I ran to the truck for my camera. I wish I would have had the bigger lens. Well, maybe tomorrow I’ll go out with the bigger lens and see if I can get it before it clears the mountains.
On a side note, all the smoke in the air is playing hell with my allergies. I don’t even know if I can take an allergy pill with all the medication I’m taking right now, so currently I’m making fairly large inroads into the box of tissues on my desk. I can’t imagine how bad it must be in California right now.
Good luck to any of you in the fire area. Stay safe.

I just had to share this nifty website that I found via Lifehacker.com. Ever wanted to make a font with your own handwriting? Now you can, with FontCapture. I’ve always wanted to do this, but it was usually expensive and/or complicated. FontCapture just needs a printer (to print out a single page PDF form), a scanner (to scan in the completed form), and a pen… and it’s free! I tried two different versions.. one with a medium point Sharpie marker, and one with a gel pen. Both of them came out great.
This took me, from start to finish, about 15 minutes (if you don’t count the time I spent trying to make my scanner work with Windows 7). Aren’t they pretty? I think I’m going to experiment with different pen sizes to see if I can get the perfect one. I read that an ultra fine point Sharpie works best, but I can’t find mine at the moment. I’ll have to look for it.
Go try it out!

Short update:
Down to 150mg of Lyrica a day, and the mood swings have died down quite a bit. I also have a lot of my brain function again. Unfortunately, the pain is back. I has a sad. I was hoping we could kill the mood swings and keep the pain relief, but it doesn’t look like it. I’ll report back to my rheumatologist on Thursday, and we’ll see what happens.
I’m out and about today, so I don’t have time for a full post. Here’s something to make you laugh a bit. This cat looks just like Ozzy.
