Rain
Jul 21st
Finally.
We haven’t seen much moisture here over the past few weeks, and the temperatures over the last week have been over 100° F. My poor lawn has been suffering.
I’ve been trying to keep it watered, but the heat is just really tearing into it. I think next spring I’ll overseed with some drought tolerant seed. This rain is going to help a bit, though.
The bad part about the rain: I was just getting ready to take the boys to the park so they could chase the ball. Unfortunately, with the rain, I’d wind up with two mudballs masquerading as dogs. They wouldn’t mind, but I think Brian would be a bit annoyed at mud all over the inside of the truck. Well, that, and I really don’t feel up to giving them baths today. At all. So, we have sad dogs.
This is Ares being a sad dog. He’s being very good at it this morning.

New flatware from my contest prize!
This is my comparison shot… the old stuff is on the left, the new stuff is on the right. These are huge compared to my old flatware. The small spoons are about the same size as the soup spoons in my old set, the salad forks are about the same size as the dinner forks in the old set.
All in all, I’m rather impressed. They’re quite heavy and sturdy, and I like the larger sizes. The soup spoons are definitely soup spoons; eating a bowl of cereal with them will be pretty much out of the question. Much too big. They’re very comfortable in the hand, and I think I’ll enjoy using them. Brian seems to like them, we’ll see once we actually get a chance to use them.
In case you’re wondering, the brand is International, and the pattern is called “Satin Danford”. This is a service for 8, with steak knives and extra pieces. I’m definitely happy with them.
Thanks again for the contest, Kitten With a Whiplash!

We need a new one. This one is full.
We have a rather eclectic selection… science fiction & fantasy, thrillers, textbooks, cookbooks (I collect way too many), computer and how-to books. We had to get a bit creative with the way we shelved them. I think it looks halfway decent… my objective was to not have it look “stupid”.
Ozzy, as usual, has managed to photobomb this picture. I let him get away with it. I’m beginning to think most of my indoor shots will include at least one dog or cat.

Lawn!
Jun 17th
Yes, we have achieved lawn. It’s a bit scraggly, there are some morning glories that need to go away, and it’s in dire need of edging… but it’s a lawn!
Revel in the green lushness of my yard. Marvel at the change from dirt to grass. Be amazed!
Yes, I am thrilled about grass. This is the most excitement I get lately. Enjoy!
Front yard update
May 11th
Oh so slowly, grass is growing. I have to water 3 times a day, especially now that it’s getting warmer. I have to set alarms on my phone, or I will forget and my poor grass will dry up. So far, it’s working well.
All the white specks you see in the dirt are elm seeds. The trees here are going nuts. My allergies haven’t been too bad (I’m allergic to elm trees, of course), but I’ve spent most of my time inside. I will be glad when they are finished with whatever it is trees do to reproduce. I also hope that the grass grows faster than the baby elm trees, and I can mow before the entire yard is taken over by elms. I’m constantly hacking down elms that get established along the foundation of my house. It’s damn near impossible to get rid of them… I chop them down, and they just come back. Roundup only seems mildly effective. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to comment. I’m really beginning to hate them.

Updates
Apr 30th
Just realized I was missing a few final updates, so I’ll fill you in.
Clyde went to go stay with his owner’s cousin last Friday. He was a great dog to get to know; if I didn’t already have a houseful of pets, he would have been an awesome dog to have. It was hard to have him here, though… Apollo didn’t want him near us, and would park himself on the floor so he was between Clyde and us. I couldn’t let Clyde off the leash in the house, because he thought cats were something to chase. If I’d had time, I could have trained him not to do it, but I knew he wasn’t going to be here for long. I really enjoyed having him here, though. He was a gentleman, and just a super sweet dog. Good luck, Clyde and family!
The swamp cooler was finally installed last week, and that made me VERY happy. The guys who came out (to replace the guy who couldn’t be bothered to show up) were polite, professional, and wonderful to have here. The installed the cooler, fixed a few problems we didn’t know we had (oops, broken water line), and were very reasonably priced. My recommendation, if you live in the area: AWR Maintenance are great handymen. We will definitely call them again. Great work, guys.
The swamp cooler was really nice this past week. It got a bit warm around here. Of course, it’s been cold and icky the past few days, but summer is on the way. We’ll definitely get our money’s worth out of this. Oh.. thanks, Mom and Dad, for paying for the installation. That was a big help.
That’s been our excitement here. My son and his wife came out for the weekend, which was very nice. We really had a nice visit, and it was very relaxing and fun. I’ll post pictures of our drive up the Monument later; I still need to pull them off the little camera.

Yard Update: Grass!
Apr 27th
We have grass. I repeat, we have grass.
The sad thing is that this has made me realize that my life is so boring that I am getting excited about watching grass grow, and I’m blogging about it. I don’t mind it, but I just wonder why anyone even reads this thing. This must be the most boring blog on the internet.
Oh well, it could be worse, I suppose it could be the craziest blog on the internet.
