Is Fibromyalgia/CFS caused by a retrovirus? I get a lot of hits to my blog on those search terms. There was a study released back in October that looked promising to those of us who know nothing about the science end of this. Unfortunately, the more research I do, the more it looks like this is all just a bunch of nothing. It would be nice to know what causes this stuff, but I’m not going to buy in to the latest “miracle answer”. Especially when said answer involves a conflict of interest a mile wide. The same study that showed the link between CFS and XMRV was done by the only company offering a test to detect said XMRV at a cost of around $650. Yeah, that pretty much screams conflict of interest to me.
Attempts to reproduce this study have failed, and from my limited understanding of the science, this looks like a bust for the XMRV theory. Ah well. Maybe someday they’ll figure out what the hell is causing this stuff, and finally be able to fix it (or at least treat it properly). The current treatments are all pretty hit and miss (in my case, pretty much miss), and it would be nice to get them aimed in the right direction.
Those of you who found my blog looking for info on Fibromyalgia and the retrovirus… I wish I could offer you some comfort. It’s frustrating to have a disease when you have no idea what’s causing it, and even more frustrating when people (and doctors) don’t get it. Hang in there, and they’ll find a cure for this one day. In the meantime, we just keep hanging in there, weeding out the reality from the falsehoods so prevalent on the internet.
Hang in there, it’ll get figured out eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
