Dinner was great.

I’ve been asked to post my recipe for potato soup, so here goes.

  • 6 medium/large red potatoes, diced
  • 1/2 lb bacon (diced) or breakfast sausage
  • 4 tbls flour
  • butter
  • milk
  • salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste.

Cook diced potatoes in water until tender, drain.

Meanwhile, cook bacon or sausage in a large saucepan until done. Remove meat from pan. Reserve fat. Add 4 tbls fat back into the pan, adding butter to make up the difference if there is not enough. Over med-low heat, add 4 tbls flour to make a roux. Stir until bubbly. Remove from heat. GRADUALLY add 2 cups of milk, stirring constantly, until smooth. Bring to a simmer and stir until thickened. Add meat and cooked potatoes into pan. Add milk to cover potatoes. Heat on very low heat until just at a simmer. Simmer for about 20 minutes. Serves 4-6.

Season to taste.. I use about a tablespoon garlic powder, tsp salt and tsp pepper – adjust that to taste. Serve with warm bread. :)

Dinner

I used sausage in this one. If you use bacon, make sure to dice it fairly small and cook it until crisp. It’ll soften in the soup and you don’t want it undercooked.

Tasty!

I decided to put my mixer to use today, and have managed to produce two slightly misshapen loaves of sourdough bread.

Sourdough Bread

This is really good bread… I decided to buy some sourdough starter online after I kept screwing mine up, and located a great place to buy San Francisco Sourdough starter. I need to get some of the other goodies that they have on that website, but what I have now works fine. The Mixer has made a huge difference in the quality and quantity of bread I turn out… it’s a lot easier to make the dough, so I do it a lot more often. If you’re into bread baking, I highly recommend giving sourdough a try.

On the needles…

Wow… knitting. I have been slacking this week, mostly because I have been working on my blog. Knitting has kind of been put on hold all week. I have managed to get a little bit of work done on my Felici socks, and I’m very tickled with the way they’ve been coming out.  You can really see the pattern on the instep coming together.

Socks

As you can see, I’m nowhere near the heel yet.  I’ve only managed to knit for about an hour this week… I really think I need to do better.  I have so many projects in the works and lined up.  The stitch pattern for the instep is easy, but you have to think about it because it’s so asymmetrical.  I’ve had to drop stitches and rework them several times because I’ve purled where I should have knit, and knit where I should have purled.

I will probably be setting these aside for the week, as I need to make birthday gift for someone.  I won’t say what, as she reads my blog. ;)

The Contest

The Sock Yarn Haiku contest is going wonderfully… I’ve never seen so many awesome haiku!  And to sock yarn, no less.  I love it.  You guys are all really creative.  Keep ‘em coming, I’m really enjoying this.

Introducing Karma

Karma is our shy little “tuxedo cat”… getting a picture of her to post here was a bit of a challenge. I can’t use my big camera, the Nikon D50, because it scares her. Just point it at her from anywhere in the room and she instantly vanishes. I had to sneak up on her with my little camera to get this shot. It helped that I just put out a fresh dish of water. She always comes running for that, because she hates to drink out of it after the dogs have slobbered in it. Most of the time she just asks us to turn on the faucet for her so she can get a fresh drink.

Karma

Karma is the “First Pet” in our house. My husband found her before we met. She was a tiny little kitten meowing on his front step in the pouring rain. He took her in and fed her ham and the rest is history. Karma adores him, and I have became an “acceptable substitute” for his presence. I felt so honored the first time she jumped up and sat on my lap. She really is a shy girl. If you ever come over to visit, you probably won’t see her until you’ve been here quite a few times.

She loves Shiva, avoids Alley Cat, tolerates the dogs, and is just plain annoyed by Ozzy. He loves her, so he follows her everywhere… which drives her crazy. She likes her space, and he is in it. He’s getting better about leaving her alone after she whacked him the other day. I think. Sometimes that boy is not very bright.

Bad day at the office.

Just a random weekend funny:

My husband emailed this to me the other day. I was laughing so hard I was crying. If you’ve ever worked in an office, you’ll understand. Enjoy. :)

An observation on message boards.

Specifically, Ravelry message boards.

Any given conversation, if it spans a long enough time, will eventually devolve into discussions about Alan Rickman and/or food. It is inevitable.

Not that I’m complaining… ;)

Contest – Sock Yarn Haiku

It was suggested to me that a new blog needs a celebration. How do you celebrate a blog? Well, by having a contest! And not just any contest. This contest is a haiku contest. Write your best haiku about sock yarn, and I will pick someone to win this lovely skein of hand-dyed (by me!) sock yarn. It’s not the most perfect dye-job in the world, as I am still learning. But the colors are fun (if you like green, that is… if you hate green, I have a couple more undyed hanks that I could give a shot at dyeing in the colors you like. No guarantees, though), and hey.. it’s sock yarn!

Sock Yarn

This is a lovely skein, dyed in green, blue and yellow, and completely overdyed in green. It is a 75% Superwash Merino Wool/25% Nylon blend, with 462 yards (422 meters) in the skein.

Sock Yarn

If you’re not sure what a haiku is, here is the dictionary definition:

noun: An unrhymed verse form of Japanese origin having three lines containing usually five, seven, and five syllables respectively.

Here is an example:

Sock yarn in my stash
Lovingly dyed with kool-aid
Delicious color.

Easy… leave a comment with your haiku in it, and you’re automatically entered! I will run the contest through May 15th, and on the 16th I will choose a winner. Winner will be completely subjective… I pick the one I like the best! I’ll need your email address or a link to your blog to notify you if you’re the winner.

Thanks for visiting!

Update, May 8: I have added a matching set of stitch markers to the prize!

The Sacraments of Knitting

Is knitting a religion? Could be… and judging from the Ravelry forums, there are thousands of denominations! I found this lovely post over at The Lumpy Knitter’s blog – The Sacraments of Knitting: A Simple Tract. Go take a look, I think you’ll enjoy it. It definitely made me smile.

I wonder if I could hand a few of those out to friends?
