Computer Woes

Rule number 1 of computing: Always make a backup. Rule number 2: See rule number 1.

As we have been putting off setting up the file server, of course my husband’s hard drive would pick this weekend to crash. Horribly. Click of death, never to be seen again. Of course, since I hadn’t set up the file server, he had no backup. Fortunately, he had transferred his resume and his World of Warcraft files over to the laptop before we left for the weekend, so at least he has the important stuff. *grin*

On the plus side, this has encouraged me to get off my butt and figure out WHY the file server is not setting up correctly… I haven’t been able to install any flavor of Linux, and even the Windows XP install crashed 3-4 times before I got it working. So, instead of griping at “that damn computer”, I figured I’d run a few tests and see what was wrong with it. If a computer hard locks during an OS install, dammit, something is wrong. First check? RAM. Memtest86 immediately comes back and tells me my RAM is completely messed up. Woo! At least I know what the problem is now.

So.. after breakfast I get to selectively interchange memory sticks to see if I can spot the bad one. I just hope it’s the little one instead of the big one. Memory for that old beast is expensive.

Updates to come!
